My Role

Conducting heuristic evaluation and cognitive walkthrough

Mood Tracker

KEY FINDINGS
  • Providing clearer instruction to the user regarding the capabilities of the site is a top priority. Including a walkthrough tutorial that appears immediately after a user creates an account, or adjusting the position of the current overview such that it has greater visibility, could help users learn more about the different ways that they can use the site. If users are unsure about what they can accomplish on the site, they may not take the time to navigate around to uncover what they can and cannot do.

  • Cleaning up redundant links on the homepage is another important priority. Removing unnecessary links would enhance the visual aesthetic of the site, as well as minimize the potential that users will become confused by which link to select. User testing could examine which links users select more often in order to identify which redundant links could be removed from the site.

  • Lastly, allowing the user to manually enter data into the Mood Tracker could create an experience of greater control. If the user does not identify the option they are looking for in the Mood Tracker entry box to describe their mood, symptoms, treatments, or life events, they may not feel that they have accurately captured what they experienced in the tracker; this could lessen their level of commitment to using this tool. User testing could further investigate the degree to which users feel limited by not having the ability to manually enter data.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

I conducted a heuristic evaluation and a cognitive walkthrough to identify potential usability issues within the Mood Tracker application and the homepage of the My MedHelp site: http://www.medhelp.org/. This site provides users with the ability to track health conditions, such as weight, blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol. Users can also join support communities, read health news, and research symptoms and treatments. The site can be accessed on a desktop, and MedHelp also offers iPad and mobile apps. My evaluations focused solely on the desktop version of the site.
